Alexander McDermott

Before the war

He was born in 1834/35 (6 (26 in 1861), 7 (20?), 11 (35 in ?1871), 12 (60 in ?1886), 14 (61 in ?1886)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 11, 12, 14).

When he enlisted, he was a boatman (7). (He apparently had some connection with Phoenixville (15).)

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a ruddy complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (7).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 16 December 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 15 [musician]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Kayser (5, 7). He was mustered by Lieutenant Kayser (7). He was a private in company B (1, 16, 17).

On 23 February 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty at Windmill Point Hospital (3).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (13).

On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (2). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (4).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864, at Petersburg, Virginia (1, 6, 15).

He mustered out when his term expired, about 16 December 1864 (1, 6, 8 [18 Jun 64], 10, 15 [15 Dec 1865]). He had served for thirty-six months (11 (43 months), 12 (36 months), 14 (36 months)). He was a private, in company B (16, 17).

After the war

On 18 December 1871, he successfully applied for a pension (8).

On 21 December 1871, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (11). He had a thigh wound (11). He was receiving a pension of $2 per month (11).

On 18 June 1872, he was discharged from the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (11).

On 9 November 1886, he was admitted from Pennsylvania to the National Soldiers Home (12, 14). He was wounded in his left thigh, and received a pension of $2 per month (12, 14).

In 1887, he was present in the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (12).

He died on 21 July 1888, at the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (14).
