He was born about 1822, in Scotland. [sources: date: 2 (29 in 1861), 6 (40 in 1862), 9 (35 in 1860). place: 9.]
On 17 May 1852, he married Emeline Hope, at Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. (He was "of Columbia", and she "of Wrightsville".) She was born in 1831/35, in Pennsylvania. They had two children: [sources: 9, 10, 11]
They moved in 1853 to Allegheny County, but lived there only briefly. While there, Emeline's sister Rachel visited them to help her while she was pregnant. [source: 11]
In 1860, he was living in Wrightsville Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Emaline and their children George and James. He was a boat builder, and owned $30 in personal property. [source: 9]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 15 October 1861. He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 10 (enrolled 4 Nov, mustered 3 Dec), 12-14]
On Wednesday 8 January 1862, he was part of a corporal's guard arresting a deserter. According to the official Army account, in a conflict with a squad of deserters, one of them hit him, fracturing his skull. A contemporary newspaper account has a different story. They began fighting at Third and German Streets, at least partly because most of them were drunk. McLaughlin hit one with his rifle so hard that he himself fell, breaking his skull when he hit the corner of a step. He was initially taken to the Southwark Hall, but the injury was so severe that he was sent to the Government Hospital on Christian Street, above Ninth Street. When they refused to admit him, he was returned to the Southwark Hall, and then sent to Penn Hospital, which treated him. [source: 6, 11]
He died of this accident on Friday 10 January 1862. He was a private, in company B. A Coroner's Inquest was held, and found that a fractured skull caused his death. Unfortunately, the jury reported that they did not know how his skull was fractured. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania. [source: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 11, 12-14]
On 3 August 1863, his widow, Emeline McLaughlin, successfully applied for a pension. Her post office address was Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted on 3 August 1865, retroactive to 10 January 1862. She initially received a pension of $8.00 per month. [sources: 4, 5, 11]
On 5 September 1866, Emeline applied for the increased pension available because of their two children. Her application was approved on 12 July 1867, after some discussion of inconsistent birth dates, retroactive to 25 July 1866. [source: 11]
In 1870, his widow, Emeline McLaughlin, was living in Wrightsville Borough, York County, Pennsylvania. She was living with their children George and James. She owned real estate worth $550. [source: 10]
On 3 April 1878, his widow, Emeline J McLaughlin, died. She was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville, York County, Pennsylvania. [source: 8]
Her pension was last claimed through 4 December 1877, and she was dropped on 31 March 1881. [source: 11]

FATAL RESULT.--On Saturday the coroner held an inquest on the body of William McLaughlin, forty years old, a corporal of Col. Gregory's regiment, who died at the Penn Hospital on Friday, from the result of receiving a fracture of the skull. It seems that on Wednesday a corporal's guard had a deserter, or a fellow who overstaid his time. At Third and German streets the party got into a squabble, most of them being under the influence of liquor. The corporal struck one of the men on the head with his rifle, inflicting a nasty and dangerous wound on the head, the hammer of the lock penetrating the skull. The blow was so violent that its rebounding force threw the corporal off his guard, and he fell, with violence enough to break his skull, by coming in contact with the corner of a step. He was taken to the Southwark Hall, where he was attended to by Dr. Stewart, who was called in by Lieutenant Hampton.
The injury being very severe, a cab was procured by Lieutenant Hampton, who sent him to the Government Hospital, on Christian street, above Ninth. His admittance into this institution was refused, and the unfortunate man, still insensible, was taken back to the Hall. Lieutenant Hampton then sent him to the Penn Hospital, where he was at once received and properly attended to. The coroner having made a full investigation on Saturday, the jury rendered a verdict attributing his death to accident.
When the unfortunate corporal was taken to the Southwark Hall, it was reported that he was the victim of foul play. The police went at once in search of the others of the party, and succeeded in taking them. They were under the influence of liquor.
The facts being made known, the party were sent to the camp, when the man who was wounded by the blow given him by the corporal, as above stated, was placed under the care of the surgeon. We learn that his wound is considered rather dangerous.
