Before the war

He was born in 1823, in Germany. [sources: date: 7, 8; 3 (40 in 1865), 4 (40 in 1865), 11 (60 in 1885), 12 (60 in 1885), 13? (29 in 1860), 14? (42 in 1870). place: 3, 8, 11, 12, 13? (France), 14? (France)]

In 1860, perhaps he is the John T Allard livign in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. If so, he was a day laborer, and owned $50 in personal property. He was living with Susan (presumably his wife) and William A (presumably their child) Allard, along with two others. [source: 13]

He also served in company G of the 51st Pennsylvania Infantry, apparently from 20 September 1861 (enlisted at Bellefonte, PA) to 18 October 1864 (discharged at Indianapolis, Indiana). [sources: 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 (2nd battalion Pennsylvania VRC)]

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 23 or 24 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster. He was mustered in as a private, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He reported for duty on 23 March 1865. His service was credited to the seventeenth congressional district. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company D. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 10, 12, 15]

After the war

In 1870, perhaps he is the John Allart living in Barree Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. If so, he was a laborer, and owned $800 in personal property. He was living with his wife Susan, and children Marquis and Anna Allart (along with one other). [source: 14]

On 28 or 29 January 1885, he was admitted from Pennshylvania to the Southern Branch of the National home for disabled volunteer soldiers. He had general debility. He was divorced. The contact listed for him is Anne Allert, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11 (29 Jan), 12 (28 Jan)]

On 20 March 1886, he successfully applied for a pension. [sources: 5, 6]

He died on 25 January 1895, at Osceola Mills, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, while he was on furlough from the National Home. He was receiving a pension of $24 per month.
