Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 or 29 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Scranton, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Colonel Boole. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [sources: 1 (29 Mar), 2 (27 Mar), 3 (27 Mar), 16]

He was discharged by general order on 23 August 1865. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 16]

After the war

In 1867/68, he married Mary E [unknown family name]. She was born in July 1852, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had three children:

In 1870, he was living in Shickshinny Borough, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Emily, and daughter Nellie. He was a laborer, and owned $100 in personal property. [source: 4]

In 1880, he was living in Shickshinny Borough, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary E, and daughters Nellie and Lottie. He was a confectioner. [source: 5]

In 1890, he was living in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. [source: 3]

In 1900, he was living at 20 Union Street, Shickshinny Borough, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary E and son William. He was a merchant in dry goods and groceries. [source: 6]

On 13 December 1905, he died, in his home, in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He died of 'heart trouble'. He was survived by his wife and three children. He was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 9 (1906), 10, 11 (1905), 12 (13 Dec 05)]

On 8 June 1906, William A Masters was appointed guardian of William S Bachman (Stephen Bachman's son), on $1,000 bond. [source: 13]

His widow successfully applied for a pension. [source: 9]

In 1910, his widow Emma was living in Shickshinny Borough, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her son William. She was a merchant of a general store. [source: 7]

On 25 March 1919, his widow, Emma Bachman, died at her home in Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She was survived by three children: William Bachman, Nellie Confer, and O E Suttliff, apparently all living in Shickshinny. She was buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. [source: 14]

(In 1900, Nellie Confer was widowed, and living with four children: Lena C (born Mar 1887), Thomas S (b. Oct 1888), Emma (b. Jan 1891), and Warren (b. Mar 1895). I didn't find Mrs O E Suttleff in a quick search.) [sources: 15]

S. A. BACHMAN DEAD

Stephen A. Bachman, a well known resident of Shickshinny, dropped dead in the yard of his residence last night. Heart trouble was the cause of death. Deceased conducted a general store in Shickshinny and was an excellent citizen. He was an old resident of that place and was a veteran of the Civil War. His wife and three children survive him. The funeral announcement will be made later.

MRS. EMMA BACHMAN.

Mrs. Emma Bachman, aged 67 years, died yesterday at noon at her home on Union street in Shickshinny after a long illness of complications. She is survived by three children, William Bachman, Mrs. Nellie Confer and Mrs. O. E. Suttliff, of Shickshinny. Funeral on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Pine Hill Cemetery.
