91st PA: Samuel H Barr alias Samuel Barkey

Samuel H Barr alias Samuel Barkey

Name

He enlisted under the alias 'Samuel H Barkey'. Since he enlisted in the 91st under 'Samuel H Barr', and the post-war information I have about him suggests he continued using 'Samuel Barr', I suspect he may have enlisted under an alias in another regiment. [sources: 4, 9]

Before the war

He was born in Pennsylvania, in 1845/46. [sources: 2 (19 in 1865)]

When he enlisted, he was a laborer. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He also served in the 18th US infantry. He was enlisted in October 1861. He was taken prisoner near Chatanooga, Tennesse in July 1862, and was paroled in August 1862. [sources: 3, 4, 9]

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 23 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowen. He was a private in company H. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (1864), 9, 10]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 9, 10]

In 1865/66, he married Mary J [unknown family name]. She was born in May 1846, in Pennsylvania. They had thirteen known children:
