91st PA: Henry Bartells

Henry Bartells

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1839/40 to Henry G Bartell and Philemon [unknown surname]. [sources: date: 3 (21 in 1861), 5 (9 in 1850), 6 (11 in 1860), 7 (28 in 1870), 8 (39 in 1880), 9 (40 in 1881). place: 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

In 1850, he was living in ward 1, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Henry and Philemon (presumably his parents), and with Elizabeth, Caroline, and Louisa (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 5]

In 1860, he was apparently living in ward 18, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Emily Bartle (his parents?), and with Elizabeth, George, Caroline, and Emily (siblings?), along with Ann Gallagher (a domestic). He had attended school within the year. [source: 6]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 29 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McArthur. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 11, 12]

He deserted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 21 January 1862. He was a private, in company C. The company C register of deserters reports his "whereabouts [were] not known". [sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 11, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Henry Bartel (apparently his father), and with Caroline Keneba (Theonebe?) and her family. He was a clerk in the store, presumably his father's stove store. [source: 7]

In 1880, he was living at 1112 Callowhill Street, ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Lewis and Caroline Thoenaba (?Theonebe) (his sister and brother-in-law), their family, and others. He was working in a stove store. [source: 8]

On 5 April 1881, he died, of phthisis pulmonalis. He died at, or was buried from, 1112 Callowhill Street, ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 7 April 1881, he was buried at Mount Peace Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 9, 10]

Note on identification

I have three other candidates for being my Henry Bartell.

John Henry Bertel [?], born 1839/40, PA, apparently to J and Anna Maria Bertel [?]
the only reference I have to him is the 1850 census; the Ancestry index reads 'Bertel', but I suspect the name is either 'Beitel' or 'Britel' (as in the FamilySearch index)--the name is very hard to read, but that an 'i' precedes the 't' is clear
John Henry Bertel, 10, b. PA, with J (40 b. Wurtemburg) and Anna Maria (38 b. Wurtemburg) Bertel, and Maria Catharine (16), Louisa (12), Anna (10), Amelia (7), Samuel (3), George Washington (0) (all born PA) and two others (Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, South Mulberry ward, microfilm series M432, film 815, page 238 verso = 476 handwritten) (FamilySearch, indexed under 'Britel'. I suspect the name is either 'Beitel' or 'Britel'--the name is very hard to read, but there is a clear dot indicating an 'i' before the 't')
Henry Charles Bartels, born Jan 1837, England, parents born Germany, married Hannah, children include John F, George W, Charles H, and Frank
I have found him in the 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses
According to the 1900 census, he immigrated in 1866; according to the 1910 census, he immigrated in 1851
I have tentatively excluded him because (a) I have not found him in the 1860 census, and because he is listed in the 1870 census under the name 'Charles'. Of course, neither reason is even close to decisive.
1870: Charles Bartels (apparently the Henry C Bartels who appears in the 1880-1920 censuses) (24, b. England), with Hannah (23, b. PA) et al., in ward 1, district 3, series M593, film 1387, page 620 verso = 94 handwritten (FamilySearch)
1880: Henry Bartels (33, watchman, b. England, parents born Germany) is living with Hannah (31), John F (9), Geo W (9), Chas H (5), and Frank W (5 m) (all born PA), in Philadelphia, microfilm series T9, film 1166, page 24 = 16 handwritten
1900: Henry Bartels, 63, b. Jan 1837, Germany, immigrated in 1866, married 30 years, with wife Hannah (57 b. PA, 5 children sall living), and children Charles, Frank, and Marshall, in German Baptist Home, ward 35, Philadelphia, microfilm series T623, film 1477, page 232 = 8 B handwritten (FamilySearch)
1910: Henry C Bartels (63, b. Germany, immigrated 1851), with wife Hanah (67 b. PA), narried 41 years, 5 children all living, Frederick (39) et al., in ward 39, Philadelphia, enumeration district 986, microfilm series T624, film 1409, page 55 = 19 B handwritten (FamilySearch)
1920: Henry Bartels (82, b. Germany), in German Baptist Home, ward 35, Philadelphia, microfilm series T625, film 1637, page 13 A (FamilySearch)
Henry W Bartell, born 1844/45, married Kate, child Kate
He is younger than the reported age of the Henry Bartels who served in the 91st
a Henry W Bartell (25), with Kate (21) and Kate (1) is living in Philadelphia ward 8 district 24, microfilm series M593, film 1421, page 37 recto = 73 handwritten (2nd enumeration)
