Before the war

He was born in September 1844, in Milton, [Northumberland County,] Pennsylvania, apparently to William Bartholomew and Susan [unknown family name]. In 1850, he was living in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Susan (presumably his parents), and Eliza, Mary, and Emma Jane (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 14]

In 1860, he was living in Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Susan (presumably his parents), and with Eliza, Mary, David, and Henry (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 15]

When he enlisted, he was a boatman. [sources: 5, 6]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 5, 6 (5'6")]

During the war

He also served in company C of the 6th Connecticut Infantry, under the alias 'John Brady'. [sources: 8, 11, 12, 21]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 25 October 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Hall. He was a private in company F. [sources: 1, 5, 12, 19, 20, 22]

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 7]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863. He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant W H Carpenter. [sources: 1, 6]

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest. [source: 3]

On 18 March 1864, he was released from arrest and restored to duty, but the pay for the time he were absent, transportation, and the reward authorized for deserters, along with the cost of any lost property were deducted from his pay. [source: 2]

On 26 March 1864, he was reported sent to hospital. [source: 4]

He deserted on 20 June 1865. He was then a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 19, 20, 22]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with William and Susan Bartholomew (presumably his parents), and with Frank, Mary, and George (presumably his siblings). He was a stone mason. [source: 16]

In 1872/73, he married Susan Melissa [unknown surname]. She was born in November 1849, in Pennsylvania. They had one known child:

In 1890, he was living in ward 2, South Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. [source: 10]

On 23 July 1890, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 8, 11]

In 1900, he was living in Exira Township, Audobon Township, Iowa. He was living with his wife Melissa and son William. He was a farmer and stonemason. [source: 17]

In 1910, he was living in Henry Township, Payne County, Oklahoma. He was a farmer. He was living with his wife Susan, his son Will, and Will's family. [source: 9]

He died on 16 November 1913, at Stillwater, Oklahoma. On 17 November 1913, he was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma. [sources: 11, 12, 13 (Henry, Payne, OK)]

On 29 November 1913, his widow, Susan M Bartholomew, applied unsuccessfully from Oklahoma for a pension. [sources: 8, 11]

In 1920, his widow Melissa was living in Drumright, Creek County, Oklahoma. She was living with her son William, his wife Isable, and others. [source: 18]
