When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [sources: 2 (5'3-1/4" (?), blue eyes, brown hair), 3 (5'7", light eyes, blue hair)]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 January 1864 or 28 January 1865 He was enlisted for one year, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lane. After the war

On 9 October 1865, he and others published an ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer supporting Jacob E Ridgway for State Senator in the second district. [source: 9]

In 1870, he may be the Joseph Bailey living with Harriet (presumably his mother), William, Charles, Mary, and George (presumably siblings--and perhaps a nephew?). He was a laborer. [source: 15]

He married Sarah [unknown surname]. She was born in December 1851, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They had three known children:

In 1880, he was living at 2454 Ingersoll Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah, children William and Harriet, sister Mary McKinley and Mary's family. He was "at work". [source: 16]

In 1890 he was living at 1526 Cuthbert Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city directory lists no occupation for him. William Irving was also living there. [sources: 4, 5]

On 2 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 6, 8]

On 3 October 1891, he died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of pulmonary consumption. He died at, or was buried from, 1526 Cuthbert Street, 9th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The funeral was on Tuesday, 6 October 1891, at 1526 Cuthbert Street (his residence). He was buried at Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 7, 8, 10, 13]

On 17 October 1891, his widow, Sallie Baley, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 6, 8]

In 1900, his widow, Sallie Bailey, was living at 2048 Wilder Street, ward 36, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her children William and Joseph J Bailey, and with a boarder. [source: 17]

On 11 June 1903, his widow, Sarah Baley, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of paralysis of heart, with interstitial nephritis contributing. On 14 June 1903, she was buried, in Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 12]
