William Bailey (or Bayley)

Before the war

He was born in 1831/32, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 6 (29 in 1861), 7 (29 in 1861). place: 6, 7]

When he enlisted, he was a laborer, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 6, 7]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair. [sources: 6, 7 (5' tall)]

During the war

He was mustered in as seventh corporal of company H on 1 Oct 1861. [source: 8]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer. [source: 1]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 15 March 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Snyder. He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14]

On 26 March 1864, he was mustered by Lieutenant Burke--but the descriptive roll does not say why. [source: 6]

On 18 March 1865, he was promoted from private to corporal, effective 1 March 1865. [sources: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9]

On 27 April 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, effective 1 April 1865. [sources: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7]

On 23 June 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 8 July 1865. [source: 4]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a sergeant in company D. [sources: 1, 7, 12, 13, 14]

After the war

On 9 October 1865, he and others published an ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer supporting Jacob E Ridgway for State Senator in the second district. [source: 5]

Perhaps he is the William Bailey who died on 11 November 1882 in Philadelphia. If so, he was bured in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But I have not been able to confirm or refute this possibility. [source: 11]
