He was born on 24 October 1845, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, probably to George M D Beale and Elizabeth Beale. [sources: date: 11, 12, 14 (19 in 1861), 19 (Oct 1844), 23 (65 in 1910), 28 (67 in 1912), 29 (67 in 1912), 32 (1845). place: 14, 23, 28, 29. parents: 12]
He probably had three younger brothers: Ed, John, and Harry A Beale. [source: 12]
Two family stories have been handed down about him. According to the first, he was playing pool in the pool hall next to the theater when Lincoln was shot. According to the second, he made all his money in the Louisiana Lottery. [source: 12]
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He had a scar over his right eye. [source: 14]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 2 December 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Parsons. He was a private in company K. [sources: 1, 14, 24, 25, 32, 33, 34]
He was transferred on 24 December 1861 to company C. [sources: 1, 17, 25, 28, 29]
On 7 May 1863, he was reported missing in action. On 11 May 1863, he was again reported missing in action, but was "reported absent wounded". On 29 or 30 May 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action. [sources: 5, 6, 8, 26 (wounded, supposed prisoner), 27 (wounded and missing)]
On 6 October 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action. [source: 9]
On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist. On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave. [sources: 2, 10, 24, 25, 31]
He returned to duty from Brigade Headquarters on 2 May 1864. [source: 16]
On 4 July 1864, he was detailed by Colonel Gregory for duty in the provost guard at brigade headquarters. He was still there in September (?) 1864. [sources: 3, 4, 7]
He mustered out near Petersburg, Virginia, on 2 December 1864 when his term expired. He had served for thirty six months. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 13, 14, 21, 24, 28, 29, 32, 33, 34]
He lived in North Philadelphia, first at 3427 Sydenham Street, and then at 3427 North 17th Street. Both were large homes. [source: 12]
He owned a race horse, named 'Corn'. [source: 12]
He married Hannah Margaret Boyce, in 1875/76. She was born in January 1853, in Pennsylvania. They had six children:

In 1880, he was living on Lamb Tavern Road, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Margaret, sons Howard and James, and uncle William Beale. He was a corn [?] dealer. [source: 18]
In 1890, he may have been living at 1626 North 11th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 22]
In 1900, he was living at 3427 North 17th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Hannah M, and his children Howard, James, Emma, William, and Harry. He was a horse [?] dealer. [source: 19]
He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 5 December 1903 and 18 February 1907. He received a pension: $25 per month from 1914, and $30 per month starting 24 October 1919. [sources: 11, 24, 25, 31]
In 1910, he was living at 1842 Taney Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his sons Howard and Harry, and Howard's family. He was apparently not working. [source: 23]
On 9 September 1912, he was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. In 1913, he was present, at the Southern Branch. He was receiving a pension of $19 per month. [sources: 28, 29]
On 13 December 1918, he was discharged from the Mountain Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was receiving a pension of $25 per month. [source: 29]
In 1920, he was living at 2539 Napa Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his daughter Emma Larkin. He was widowed, and had no occupation. [source: 20]
