Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [source: 4]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 7 October 1864. He enlisted for one year, at Monroe County, Pennsylvania. His service was credited to the Thirteenth Congressional District. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 17, 18]

He was discharged at Washington, DC, on 22 June 1865 by general order, War Department. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 5, 17, 18]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Albany Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Joseph Beeman and (apparently) Joseph's family. He was a farm laborer. [source: 12]

In 1880, he was living in Dimock, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his mother Jane E Barber, his sister and brother-in-law Matilda and Jacob Dean, and a niece. He was a farm laborer. [source: 13]

In 1890, he was living in Terry Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. He had rheumatism. [source: 5]

He successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension on 30 April 1890. [sources: 2, 8]

On 20 July 1891, in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, he married Abagail Vanderpool ("Abbie"). She was born in April 1874, in Pennsylvania. In 1900, she had had four children, two of whom were alive, including these:
