91st PA: Jacob Bender

Jacob Bender

Before the war

He was born in 1837/39, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 7 (24 in 1862), 14 (1839), 15 (11 in 1850). place: 7, 15]

In 1850, he seems to have been living with John A and Acsah Bender (presumably his parents), and Susan and John Bender (presumably his siblings). [source: 15]

Perhaps his father is the John A Bender who died on 3 November 1854, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. John was 56 years old, and lived at 117 Randolph Street, above Poplar. He was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery on Sunday 5 November 1854. [sources: 16, 17]

When he enlisted, he was a farmer. [source: 7]

Perhaps the John W Bender who served in the 91st is his brother. (Note in particular their occupations, and the 1850 census below.)

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a brown complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. [source: 7]

During the war

He enlisted on 22 July 1862. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lentz. He was a private in company G. [sources: 1, 7, 8, 12, 21]

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, acting as a nurse, and requested his return. [source: 2]

On 26 September 1863, he was reported returned from hospital for duty. [source: 4]

On 16 December 1863, either he or John Bender was detailed as nurse to Captain Faust, who died two days later. [source: 3]

He was transferred on 15 February 1864 to the Veterans' reserve corps, by general order 52. When he was transferred, he was a private, in company G. [sources: 1, 5, 6, 7, 12, 21]

He was discharged on 14 July 1865. [source: 8]

After the war

Perhaps he is the Jacob R Bender, dentist, living at 1223 Myrtle Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1867 and 1868 Philadelphia directories. But the 1868 city directory also includes a Jacob Bender, toothmoulder, at 1248 Nagle Street. [source: 13]

In 1869, he seems to have a dental instrument maker, living at 234 Perry Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]

On 30 August 1871, his mother, Achsah Kellam Bender, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of consumption of lungs. She was 69 years old, a widow, and born in Trenton, New Jersey. She died at, or was buried from, 2139 Summer St, ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the home of her son-in-law Arthur J Smith. On 2 September 1871, she was buried, in American Mechanics Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 18, 19]

In 1874 to 1875, he was a toothmaker, living at 2139 Summer Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]

In 1876, he was living at 2530 North Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]

From 1877 to 1879, he was a toothmaker or dentist, living at 1918 or 1914 Tulip Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 13]

Starting in 1884, he was living at 1913 North 11th Street. The city directory initially lists no occupation for him, but then lists him as a clerk. In 1898, he was listed as an instrumentmaker. [source: 13]

In 1890, he was living at 1913 North 11th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a dentist. [sources: 8, 9]

On 29 July 1890, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 10, 12]

He died on 2 April 1900 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was buried in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home, Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 12, 14, 20]
