In 1850, he was living in Somerset Borough, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was living with John and Mary Benford (presumably his parents), and with others (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 16]

In 1859/60, he married Ann E Stoner. She was born in November 1835, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (now Fulton County), to Jacob Stoner and Anna Catherine Freymeier. According to the 1900 census, she had had two children, one of whom was living. [sources: 7, 11 (1835), 13 (Nov 1835), 14 (0 children in 1910--but note that her parents' birthplaces are listed as unknown, which may suggest she was not the informant), 18]

In 1860, he was living in Somerset Borough, Somerset, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Anne. They had been married within the year. He was a tailor, and owned $150 in personal property. [source: 17]

In June 1863, he registered for the draft. He was living in Somerset Borough, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was a tailor. [source: 19]

He also served in company F of the 34th Regular Militia of 1863. [source: 20]

His wife, Anna Benford, was living in the next house, with her (presumed) father Jacob Stoner, and (presumed) siblings Albert, Edwin, Merick, and Lalla. [sources: 12, 18]

In 1880, his widow, Anna Benford, was living in McConnellsburg Borough, Fulton County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her niece, Laura Stoner. [sources: 6]
