In 1860, he may have been living in ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If so, he was living with Daniel and Sarah Black (presumably his parents), and with John, Jane, Margaret, Mary, and Sarah Black (presumably his siblings). He was a laborer. [source: 14]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and black hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was drafted from the fifth congressional district. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 22 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Frankford, Pennsylvania, by Captain Yardley. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 6, 18]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 18]

After the war

He married Mary Conn. She was born in Philadelphia, in March 1843, to Andrew Conn and Eliza [unknown surname]. They had two known children:

In 1870, he was living in ward 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) wife Mary, and their (presumed) child Daniel. He worked in a boiler works. [source: 15]

In 1880, he was living at 2829 Janney Street, ward 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary and children Daniel and Andrew. He was a boiler maker. [source: 16]

In 1890, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, apparently at 1922 E Clearfield Street. He was a boilermaker. [sources: 3, 4]

On 19 May 1891, he unsuccessfully applied for a pension from Pennsylvania. [sources: 5, 6]

On 22 April 1893, he died. He died of surgical shock while undergoing an operation. He was a boilermaker. He died at 1922 E Clearfield Street, ward 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his late residence. On 27 April 1893, his widow, Mary Black, successfully applied for a pension from Pennsylvania. [sources: 5, 6]

In 1900, his widow, Mary Black, was living at 1922 Clearfield Street, ward 25, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her son Andrew, and two boarders. [source: 17]

On 23 January 1903, his widow, Mary Black, died, at 1922 East Clearfield Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of gastritis. The funeral was held from her late residence, 1922 East Clearfield Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The service was held at St John's Free Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
