He married Catherine S [unknown family name] in 1860 or 1861. She was born in June 1841, in Delaware. They had four known children:

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and brown hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 13 July 1863 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His enlistment was credited to the second congressional district. [sources: 1, 3, 5, 6, 20]

He was transferred from company H of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, by special order 138, headquarters, Army of the Potomac (dated 1 June 1865). He was a private in company A of the 91st Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 5, 20]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in South Chester Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was a carpenter, and owned $200 in personal property. He was living with his wife Kate, and three children (presumably theirs): Mary, Gretta, and Phoebe. [sources: 10]

In 1880, he was living in Concord, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was "working at carpentering". He was living with his wife Kate, daughters Mary, Greta, Lizzie, and Oda, and one other person. [source: 4]

In 1890, he was living in Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [source: 6]

He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 12 September 1892 and on 18 March 1907. [sources: 2, 7]

In 1900, he was living in Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer. He was living with his wife Catherine and daughter Elizabeth. [source: 11]

In 1910, he was living in Glenolden Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, his daughter Elizabeth, and his son-in-law William Harrison. He had no occupation. [source: 12]
