place: 3, 5]
He married Carolina [unknown family name].
She was born in 1826/27, in Saxon-Meiningen.
They apparently had at least these children:
Carolina Boxberger (born 1853/54, PA)
Lewis Boxberger (b. 1854/55, PA)
Emma Boxberger (b. 1856/57, PA)
Charles Boxberger (b. 1858/59, PA

He seems to have been a grocer, living at 241 Poplar Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, probably beginning in 1859.
[source: 9]
In 1860, he seems to have been living in the 16th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3).
He was living with his wife Caroline, and his (presumed) children Caroline, Lewis, Emma, and Charles (3).
He was a lampmaker, and owned $500 in personal property (3).
When he enlisted, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2).
During the war
He enlisted and was mustered into service, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 7 October 1861.
He was mustered in as a private, in company B.
[sources: 1, 2, 10 (wagoner), 11 (wagoner)]
On a company muster roll from 7 to 31 October 1861, he is listed as deserted.
He was a private, in company B.
[sources: 1, 2, 10, 11]
He is listed as a wagoner on the company B muster-in roll, dated 31 December 1861.
[source: 11]
He is listed on a descriptive list of deserters, dated 24 March 1863.
[source: 11]
Starting probably in 1863, he seems to have been a lampmaker, with his wife running a grocery, living at 241 Poplar Street, Philadelphia.
[source: 9]
About 1866, they seem to have moved to 5 Westmore Place, Philadelphia.
[source: 9]
In 1870, he seems to have been living in the 11th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He was living with his wife Caroline and (presumed) children Caroline, Lewis, Emma, and Charles.
[source: 4]
About 1875, he seems to have moved to rear 515 North 2d street.
Perhaps his address simply changed, since Westmore Place began at 515 North 2d Street--note also that in the 1880 city directory he is listed as living at 5 Westmore Place.
They lived there until he died.
[source: 9]
He seems to have died on 9 April 1883, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of phthisis pulmonalis.
He was a lampmaker.
The funeral was held from 515 North Second Street, 11th ward, Philadelphia (his residence), on 12 April 1883.
Members of the following organizations were invited:
Allmania Lodge, number 312, International Order of Odd Fellows;
Oberasker Lodge, number 12, DOH [perhaps Degree of Honor, Ancient Order of United Workmen??];
Herrman Lodge, number 54, Knights of Pythias.
He was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
[sources: 6, 8]
John Boxberger's wife Caroline Boxberger died on 19 May 1884, probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The funeral was held on 21 May 1884, from 515 North Second Street (her residence).
She was buried in Glenwood Cemetery.

Identification is uncertain.
I have found three John Boxberger's in Philadelphia:
John Boxberger, born 1867, died on 18 March 1867 in Philadelphia, eleven weeks old (child of William and Elisa Boxberger, 1228 Charlotte St., back, 17th ward, buried Glenwood Cemetery)
John Boxberger born in Saxon-Meiningen about 1824, married Carolina
John Boxberger born in Germany about 1834, married Christiana (who died 28 Feb 1890 in Norristown PA, buried Ivy Hill); died March 1887, 22nd ward, buried Ivy Hill Cemetery [see the 1880 census entry transcribed below; see also 1870 US census, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ward 22, district 71, precinct 3, page 253 verso = 26 handwritten (labelled 'Ashmead Street'), which has John Booksberger [?] 35 shoemaker born Germany and Christiana 35 born Germany]
I have assumed that the second John (married to Carolina) is my John, because of his age.

1880 US census
According to the 1880 and 1881 Gopsill's Philadelphia directories, he was living at 5 Westmore Pl
Westmore Place went east from 515 N 2nd street, in the 11th ward (1880 city directory page 71)
the following evidence suggests that the census taker missed Westmore Place in 1880:
(a) Thomas Fitzpatrick, who lived at 515 N 2d, is in the 1880 US census at microfilm series T9, film 1172, page 443 = 2 B handwritten: the census continues along 2nd street, and Westmore Place is not covered in that enumeration district
(b) The 1881 Gopsill's directory has two entries for rear 515 North 2nd street ('Dunn Sarah, wid Thomas, h 1 r 515 N 2d' (p.487) and 'Stein Barbara, wid Joseph, h 3 r 515 N 2d' (p.1559)), which I have not found in the census (rear N 2d st is on page 454 but only for even numbers; the rear N 2d st odd numbers are not in that enumeration district)
(c) the 1881 Gopsill's directory has 'Neff Lewis, instmaker, h 3 Westmore pl' (p.1231), who isn't in the FamilySearch or HeritageQuest census indices
(d) the 1880 Gopsill's directory has these entries on Westmore place: 'Stein Edward, police, h 3 Westmore pl' (p.1604) (not in the FamilySearch index); 'Zoller Frank, harnessmaker, h 4 Westmore pl' (p.1847) (perhaps Frank S Zoller saddler at 408 6th st T9/1173/167?); 'Zoller Theresa, wid Bernhard, h 4 Westmore pl' (p.1847) (no entry in FS); 'Dunn John J., cutter, h 1 Westmore pl' (p.509) (too many for me to check!); 'Dunn Sarah, wid Thomas, h 1 Westmore pl' (p.509) (not in the FamilySearch indexon Westmore)
