In 1860, he was living in East Birmingham, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Daniel and Caroline Brown, and with Jacob, Elizabeth, and Louis (presumably other relatives). [source: 12]

When he enlisted, he was a laborer. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was a substitute for G Knoepp. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 17 or 28 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by Captain Foster. His service was credited to the 22nd Congressional District. He was a private in company G. [sources: 1 (drafted, 17th), 2 (28th), 18, 19]

He received clothing worth $36.27. [source: 2]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company G. [sources: 1, 18, 19]

After the war

In 1866/67, he married Julianna Rothleder. She was born on 2 November 1846, in Germany, to Ludwig Rotheleder, and Christina Hebbig. She immigrated to the US in 1859/60. They apparently had nine children:

In 1880, he was living at 145 18th [?] Street, ward 26, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. HE was living with his wife Julia, and children Emma, Louis, George, William, Charles, and Otto. He was a grocer. [source: 14]

In 1890, he was living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 4, 6]

On 11 November 1899, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [source: 3]

In 1900, he was living at 136 18th [?] Street, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His occupation was "grocery". He was living with his wife Julianne, two sons, one servant, and three boarders. [source: 5]

On 22 October 1906, he died, at 2224 Marion Avenue, Carrick Borough, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He died of tuberculosis pulmonalis (duration 3 years), with acute gastroenteritis (duration 21 days) contributing.
