Before the war

He was born in 1842/43 (4 (18 in 1861), 6 [49 in ?1898], 7 [49 in ?1898]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 6, 7).

When he enlisted, he was a farme[r] (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 4 feet 11-3/4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark brown hair (4).

During the war

He also served in company K of the 183rd Pennsylvania Infantry (5, 7, 8, 9). He served for eighteen months (7).

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 9 November 1861 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lentz [?] (4). He was a private, in company G (1, 9).

He was discharged at Washington DC, on 21 January 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, by order of General Martindale (1, 2 [31 Jan], 3, 4). He had served for eighteen months (6, 7 [14 months]). He was a private, in company G (9).

After the war

On 19 February 1867, he applied successfully for a pension (5, 8).

On 28 June 1898, he was admitted to the National Military Home (6, 7). He was present in the Southern Branch in 1898 (6). He was admitted from the District of Columbia (6, 7). He was receiving a pension of $10 per month (6). He had a gunshot wound in his left foot (6, 7).

He was discharged from the National Home on 4 February 1899 (7).

He died on 21 April 1901, at Washington, DC (8).

On 6 May 1901, his widow, Kate V Burgess, applied unsuccessfully from Virginia for a pension (5, 8).
