Charles Burkett

Before the war

He was born on 13 November 1837, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Charles Burkett and Rebecca D Somers. [sources: date: 17; see also 8 (24 in 1861), 9 (23 in 1861), 14 (23 in 1860), 16 (13 in 1850). place: 8, 14, 16, 17. parents: 17.

In 1850, he was living in the 2nd ward of Kensington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Charles and Rebecca, and with his siblings Milburn, Annie, Mary, Hannah, Rebecca, and Cecelia, and with Milburn (probably an older relative). [source: 16]

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Charles and Rebecca Burkett, and with his siblings Milburn, Mary, Hannah, and Rebecca Burkett. He was a moulder. [source: 14]

When he enlisted, he was a moulder and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 9]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 8, 9]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 October 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Zinn. He was mustered in at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as third corporal in company H. He had gun number 78. [sources: 1, 7, 8, 9, 18, 19]

He was reduced to the ranks on 20 May [1862]. [source: 7]

On 28 July 1863, he was reported as having been dropped because he was missing in the campaign (probably after 11 June 1863). [source: 3]

On 9 October 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action. [source: 4]

In December 1863, he was tried by court martial. [source: 15]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863. [source: 1, 9]

He was wounded on 8 May 1864, at Laurel Hill, Virginia. He died on 19 May 1864, in Frederickburg, of those wounds. He was a private, in company H. [source: 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 17 (1865), 18, 19]

After the war

On 1 February 1875, his mother, Rebecca Burkett, successfully applied for a pension. [sources: 12, 13]
