Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 1 February 1865 or 21 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 5, 17]

After the war

He married Frances Selena Hart ("Nancy"). She was born in 1836, in Pennsylvania. They had six known children:

In 1870, he may be the George H Burns living in Charleston, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Frances (presumably his wife), and with Gerrit, George, Horace, Nelson, and an infant (presumably their children). He was a farmer, and owned $1,600 in real estate and $250 in personal property. [source: 9]

In 1880, he may be the George H Burns living in Charleston, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Salena, and children Iola, Olin, Sheridan, Shurman, Hiram, and Frank. He was a farmer. [source: 10]

In 1890, his (apparent) wife Salena died. She was buried in the Wellsboro Cemetery, Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. [source: 14]

In 1890, he may be the George Burns living in Charleston, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

On 3 September 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 4, 5]

In 1900, he was (apparently) living in Charleston, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son G. He was widowed. He was a farmer. [source: 12]

On 2 February 1907 he again applied for a pension. [source: 5]
