He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (19). He was then a sergeant (19).
On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (6).
He was placed in charge of the brigade Pioneers Corps on 13 August or 15 August 1863 (2, 3, 4).
On 15 April 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex recommended him for a detail, in compliance with general order 18 (8 April 1864) from the Army Headquarters (5). He does not say what the detail was for. On 2 May 1864, he returned from duty at brigade headquarters (7).
He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, VA (1, 9).

In 1880, he was living on Lyon Street, in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa (15). He was living with his wife Harriet, children Ruth and Mary, and two boarders (15). He was a farmer (15).
In 1885, he was living in Des Moines, Iowa (12).
On 10 March 1888, he applied successfully from Iowa for a pension (13, 21).
In 1903/04, he married Sarah [unknown surname] (16). It was the second marriage for both of them (16). In 1910, she had had three children, two of them still living (16).
On 20 March 1907, he applied successfully for a pension (21).
In 1910, he was living at 853 East 47th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Pennsylvania (16). He was living with his second wife Sarah and stepdaughter Ada (16). He had no occupation (16).
In 1920, he was living at 853 East 47th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Pennsylvania (17). He was living with his wife Harriet (17). He had no occupation (17).
He died on 13 January 1923, at Los Angeles, California (21).
On 10 February 1923, his widow, Sarah H Butt, applied successfully from California for a pension (13, 21).
In 1930, his widow, Sarah H Butts, was living in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California (20). She was living with her daughter, A Lourine, and son in law (20).
