When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 7]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 25 September 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Keyser. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 7, 8, 9, 21]
On 8 October 1862, he deserted, near Washington DC. He returned. [source: 5]
On 25 September 1863, General Ayres detailed him as a saddler. He was still there in September [?] 1864. [source: 3]
On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist. On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave. [sources: 2, 4]

On 25 April 1894, he married Agnes Dillon, at Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She was born in 1864/65, to Patrick Dillon and Mary Mulcahey. They both lived in Doylestown; he was a collar and harness maker, and she was a domestic. (Her mother, Mary Mulcahey, lived from 1828-1900, and is buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Doylestown.) In 1900, he was living on York Street, in ward 1, Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Agnes, and her brother Michael Dillon. He was a collar maker, and had been unemployed for three months in the previous year. Agnes had had two children, neither of whom was alive. [source: 15]
On 19 February 1907, he again applied for a pension. [source: 11]
He died on 29 April 1907, at Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He died of uraemic toxemia, with general arteriosclerosis and contracted kidney contributing. He was a collar maker. On 1 May 1907, he was buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His grave has a Grand Army of the Republic marker.
