Before the war

He served in the Mexican War. On 1 December 1846, he enlisted in company F of the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, Philadelphia Rangers. On 15 July 1848, he mustered out with his company. [sources: 8, 18, 23, 27]

In 1849/50, he married Catherine [unknown family name]. She was born on 11 July 1821, in Pennsylvania. They had one known child:

In 1850, he was living in Middle Ward, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Catharine Carie, and with Eliza Love and Elizabeth Simpson. He was a stone cutter. [sources: 22]

Probably in fall 1859 and fall 1860, he was a conductor, living at 1712 Barker Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 34; see also 32]

In 1860, his wife Catharine, and their daughter Ida, were living in ward 9, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is not listed with them in the census. [source: 33]

On 14 July 1860, his daughter Ida Carie died, of dysentery. She died at 1712 Barker Street, ward 9, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 16 July 1860, she was buried, at Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 32]

He was living at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted. [source: 6]

During the war

He also served in company F of the 4th Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 8, 18]

He also served in company F of the 20th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He enlisted on 26 April 1861. He was mustered out on 26 July 1861. [sources: 7, 8, 18]

He was mustered into service on 10 September 1861. He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was captain of company I. [sources: 1 (10 Sep), 6 (enlisted 17 Sep, mustered in 15 Oct), 7 (2 Dec), 13, 17, 18, 23, 37]

At the end of November 1861, his company still had space for twelve men. [sources: 14, 24]

On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment. On 20 August 1862, he testified at E Carroll Brewster's court martial. He testified that he had been Officerof the Day with Brewster serving as Officer of the Guard under him several times, and Brewster had been attentive to his duty as far as he knew. [source: 9]

On 7 February 1863, he was sick, in his quarters. [source: 4]

He was discharged on 10 February 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability. He was captain of company I. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (9 Feb), 5, 6, 7 (13 Feb), 18, 23, 37]

After the war

On 8 April 1865, he swore to information supporting Annie Maguire's application for a pension based on the service of her husband James Maguire (I). [source: 36]

In 1870, he was living on the south side of South Street, 26th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife, Catherine. He was a stonecutter. [sources: 20, 21]

Probably in fall 1870, he was living at 1632 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His occupation was "china". [sources: 19]

In 1880, he was living at 1116 Nevada Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Katharine. He was a car conductor. [source: 10]

In 1890, he was living in Hulmsville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He had been shot in the left arm. [source: 7]

On 31 May 1890, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [source: 8, 18]

In 1900, he was living in Hulmsville Borough, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Catherine, and a boarder. He was a stonecutter, and had been unemployed for 12 months in the previous year. [source: 11]

On 2 December 1904, his wife, Catharine Carie, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Hulmeville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 29 (1 Dec), 30]

He applied again for a pension on 6 May 1907 (18).

He died on 2 June 1907, at 1111 Spruce Street, ward 8, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia (2 days duration), with senile decay contributing. He was buried from his late residence at 1111 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried in the Beechwood Cemetery, Hulmeville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
