Before the war

He was born in 1841/42 (5 (19 in 1861), 8 (19 in 1861), 9 [20 in 1863]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 8, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a weaver, or possibly a brickmason, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5 (brickmason), 8 (weaver), 9 (weaver)).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and red hair (5 [ruddy complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair], 8 [light complexion, grey eyes, reed [sic] hair], 9 [5'5-1/2", light grey red]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 2 December 1861 (1, 5, 8). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Phillips (5, 8). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was a private in company B (1, 13 (F)).

He was transferred to company F (1, 5).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer, on 28 or 30 March 1864 (1, 5, 9 [28 Mar]). He was reenlisted for three years, at Warrenton Junction, Virginia, by Lieutenant H Shipley (9).

On 19 April 1864, he was reported absent on a ten-day furlough (6).

He was promoted to corporal on 20 or 21 October 1864 (2 [20 Oct], 5 [21 Oct], 7 [21 Oct], 10).

He was wounded on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia (1).

On 1 February 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 11 February 1865 (4). He was reported absent without leave beginning 21 February 2006 (12). He returned on 19 [?] March 1865 (4).

He was reduced to the ranks on 31 May 1865 (3, 5).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5). He was a private, in company F (13).
