During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 October 1861 (1, 2, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (4). He was mustered in as first sergeant in company K by Lieutenant Pierce (4, 14).

He was discharged at Washington DC, on 12 September 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3). He was first sergeant of company K (1, 14).

After the war

In 1900 and 1910, Ellen Casner had had 2 children, one of whom was alive (10, 11).

Probably in fall 1869, William Casner was living at 30 Washington Avenue (13). He was a paperhanger (13).

In 1870, he was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with Ellen (presumably his wife), and with William and Ellie (presumably their children) (8). He was a paper hanger (8).

Probably in fall 1871, William Casner was living at 1404 Ellsworth Street (13). He was a clerk, at the Navy Yard (13).

On 27 September 1871, he applied successfully for a pension (5, 7).

Probably in fall 1872, William Casner was living at 1404 Ellsworth Street (13). He was a clerk, at the Navy Yard (13). John F Casner was also living there (13).

Probably in fall 1873, William Casner was living at 1404 Ellsworth Street (13). He was a shoemaker, at 505 Market (13). John F Casner was also living there (13).

He died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 15 October 1874, of phthisis pulmonalis (6). He was then a merchant (6). He was married (6). He died at, or was buried from, 1404 Ellsworth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). On 18 October 1874, he was buried at Mt Moriah Cemetery (6).

In 1880, his widow, Ellen Casner, was living at 509 Washington Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her children William and Alice, and her niece Mary Gill (9).

On 21 March 1884, his widow, Ellen Casner, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 7).

In 1900, his widow, Ella Casner, was living at 1404 South Eighth Street, ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). She had three boarders living with her (10).

In 1910, his widow, Ellen Casner, was living at 1401 Moore Street, ward 26, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). She was a lodger (11).

In 1920, his widow, Ellen Casner, was living at 1728 Green [?] Street, ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). She was a lodger (12).
