Henry Clothier

Question

Did he enlist twice, as I have assumed?

Before the war

He was born in 1828/29 (4 (32 in 1861), 5 (32 in 1861), 6 (32 in 1861), 10 [44 in 1860], 11 [50 in 1870], 12 [60 in 1880], 14 [68 at death in 1883]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14).

In 1860, he was living in the 18th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a ship joiner, and owned $75 in personal property (10). He was living with his wife Catharine and children James, Margaret, Virginia, and Martha (10).

When he enlisted, he was a shipbuilder (5, 6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and gray hair (5, 6).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 November 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 7). He was a private in company B (4, 15).

On 2 September 1863, he was reported discharged because of disability (2, 7 [3 Mar 63]). He had experienced sunstroke while marching at Washington, DC (7).

He reenlisted on 21 January 1864 (1, 4, 5, 6 [none claim he was a veteran]). He was enlisted for three years by Lieutenant Shipley, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 6). He was mustered by Lieutenant Hildeburn (5, 6). He was a private in company B (1).

He was dropped from the rolls on 1 July 1865, apparently as a deserter (1, 4, 13). He was a private, in company B (15).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a ship joiner, and owned $400 in personal property (11). He was living with his wife Catharine and children James, Virginia, and Martha (11).

In 1880, he was living at 116 East York Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was a ship joiner (11). He was living with his wife Catharine and daughter Martha (12).

He died on 13 December 1883, of typhoid fever (14). He was a ship joiner (14). He died at, or was buried from, 816 East York Street (14). He was buried on 18 December 1883, at the Palmer Vault (14).

On 30 November 1889, his widow, Catharine Clothier, unsuccessfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).
