He was a substitute (1, 2 [drafted], 3 [substitute]). He was mustered into service as a private in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 31 August 1863, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3). He was in company B of the 118th Pennsylvania (2, 3).
He was wounded at Peeble's Farm, Virginia, on 30 September 1864 (2).
On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry to company F of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 2, 3). He was a private in company F of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 4).
He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3). He was a private, in company F (4).
