Before the war

He was born in 1834/35 (5 (26 in 1861), 8 [35 in 1870], 9 [43 in 1880]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 8, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair (5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 13 or 18 November 1861 (1 [18 Nov], 3 [13 Nov], 5 [18 Nov], 10 [18 Nov]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant [?] Black, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was mustered in as a corporal in company H (1, 3, 11, 12).

He was reduced to the ranks, possibly on 20 May 1862 (3).

He was discharged at Davids Island, New York, on 25 November 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 4, 5, 10). He was a private, in company H (12).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was a farm laborer, and owned $500 in personal property (8). He was living with Marial (perhaps his wife) and Vignette (perhaps his sister?) (8).

On 26 March 1873, he applied successfully for a pension (7, 10).

In 1880, he was living on Richmond Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was a farm laborer (9). He was a boarder with William Hoffman and other people (9).

He died on 7 November 1891 (10). He was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois (6, 11).
