91st PA: Jeremiah Derr

Jeremiah Derr

Before the war

He was born in May 1845, in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Philip Derr and Mary E Call. [sources: date: 9; 2 (19 in 1861), 4, 7 (14 in 1860), 8 (35 in 1880), 9 (55 in 1900), 10 (65 in 1910), 12, 13 (5 in 1850), 14 (25 in 1870). place: 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14. parents: 12; note that 13 might suggest his mother is Catharine--Philip is not living with a wife in 1860 (7 below), but is living with Mary (38) in 1870; could she be his second wife? (see microfilm series M593, film 1384, page 17, Chilisquaque Township page 17 = 18 handwritten)]

In 1850, he seems to have been living in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Philip and Catharine Derr, along with his apparent siblings Isaiah and Aaron. He had attended school within the year. [source: 13]

In 1860, he was living in Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Philip Derr (presumably his father), six probable siblings, and two other apparently unrelated people. [source: 7]

When he enlisted, he was a boatman. [source: 4]

The Aaron Derr who also served in company F was apparently his brother. [sources: 7, 13]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, light eyes, and dark hair. [source: 4]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 or 22 October 1861. He was enlisted for three years, by Lieutenant Gregory, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, or Milton, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 2 [Philadelphia], 4 (18 Oct, Milton), 5 (18 Oct), 6 , 11 (18 Oct), 15 (18 Oct), 16]

He was promoted to corporal, probably on 1 January 1863, though possibly on 1 June 1863. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (1 Jan), 4 (1 Jan)]

He was transferred to company B of the 24th Veterans' Reserve Corps on 15 February 1864. When he was transferred, he was a corporal, in company F. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 6, 11, 16]

On 18 October 1864, he was discharged. [sources: 5, 11, 15]

He also served in company D of the 1st US Veteran Volunteers. He enlisted on 18 October 1864 or 23 January 1865. [sources: 5, 6, 11, 15 (18 Oct 64)]

On 23 January 1865, he was discharged from the 1st US Veteran Volunteers. [source: 5, 15 (23 Jan 66)]

After the war

In 1864 or 1865, he married Annie [unknown family name]. She was born in October 1847, in Rhode Island. In 1900, she had had seven children, five of whom were alive. In 1910, only four of them were alive. Their children include: [sources: 8, 9, 10, 12, 14]

In 1870, he was living in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. He was living with his wife Anna, and children Willie and Robert. He was a laborer. [source: 14]

On 19 May 1877, he successfully applied for a pension. [sources: 6, 11]

In 1880, he was living in Chillisquaque, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Annie, and children William, Philip, and Charles. He was a laborer. [source: 8]

In 1890, he was living in Chillisquaque, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (post office Milton). He had a hernia and hearing problems. [source: 5]

In 1900, he was living in Milton, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Annie and children William, Charles, Rosa, and James. He was a day laborer. [source: 9]

On 12 March 1908, he again applied for a pension. [source: 11]

In 1910, he was living at 515 South Front Street, Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Anna, and his daughter Rosa and her family. He was a house plasterer. [source: 10]

On 26 November 1914, he died, at Milton, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]
