He was born on 23 October 1821, in Red Lion Township, New Castle County, Delaware, to Hezekiah Dewees and Mahala [unknown surname]. On 8 October 1846, he married Julia Ann Griffith, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She was born in July 1824, in Pennsylvania. They have seven known children:

In 1850, he was living in Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Julia Ann, and children John Winfield and Isaac L. He was a farmer. [source: 13]

In 1860, he was living in Middletown, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Juliann, and John, Isaac, Mary, Anne, and George (presumably their children). He was a wheelwright, and owned $75 in personal property. [source: 5]

When he enlisted, he was an operator. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was drafted from the seventh congressional district. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at West Chester, Pennsylvania, by Captain Chrisman. He was a private in company H. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 16, 17]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (post office: Village Green). He was living with his wife Julia, and John, Isaac, Margaret, Anna, George, William, and Layton (presumably their children). He was a carpenter, and owned $100 in personal property. [source: 6]

In 1880, he was living in Chester Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son Isaac, Isaac's family, and several other people. He was a laborer. His wife, Julia, was living in Aston, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, with her sons William and Layton. [sources: 8]

In 1890, he was living in Aston, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (post office Glen Riddle) (3).

On 15 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 4, 15]

On 28 December 1897, he died, in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He died of dropsy. On 31 December 1897, he was buried in Calvary Episcopal Cemetery, Aston Mills (Rockdale), Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 12, 14, 15]

On 5 March 1898, his widow, Julia Deweese, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 10).
