On 13 November 1842, he married Emma E Culin. They were married by the Reverend J B Everts, pastor of New Market Baptist Church. She was born in 1818/19, in Pennsylvania. They had these children: [sources: 3, 9, 12, 13]
In 1850, he was living in the 6th ward, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania--probably on Brown Street. He was living with his wife Emma, and children Charles, George, Theodore, along with Rebecca and Ann McAlvee. He was a soap manufacturer (or chandler), probably at 326 North 2nd Street. He continued to be a chandler, at 326 North 2nd Street, living at 5th Street above Brown, and later at 480 North 5th Street, throuh 1856. [source: 18]
In 1857, he worked in trimmings, at 326 North 2nd Street. [source: 18]
In 1858, he may be the H Eckhardt, who was a soap and candle manufacturer, in Germantown. [source: 18]
In 1859, he was a soap boiler, living at 829 North 5th Street. [source: 18]
In 1860, he was a conductor, living at 1607 North 8th Street. [source: 18]
In 1860, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, probably at 1607 North 8th Street. He was living with his wife Emma, and children Charles, George, Theodore, Walter, and Albert. He was a soap boiler, and owned $300 in personal property. [sources: 17, 18]
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 4]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 29 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McArthur. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 20, 21]
His son Charles Henry Eckhart (who may well be the Charles Eckhart who served in company C. [source: 3]
He was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability on 20 February 1863, from General Hospital, David's Island, New York. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 3, 20, 21]
Apparently the regiment was never told he had been discharged. On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return, and he was declared a deserter on 30 April 1864 or on 31 March 1864. From 1862 through 1866, he was a tallowchandler, at 1607 North 8th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 18]

In 1870, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, apparently at 1607 North 8th Street. He was living with his wife Emeline, children George, Theodore, Walter, and Albert, and a "bound girl". He worked in the Navy Yard, apparently as a clerk. He owned $1000 in personal property. On 22 October 1890, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]
On 10 February 1888, his wife, Emma E Eckhardt, died, of dropsy from heart disease. She was buried from her late residence, 1648 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery. [sources: 14, 15]
On 14 May 1892, he died, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of chronic mental disorder and valvular disease of heart. He was widowed. He died at, or was buried from, 1635 North 8th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried from his late residence 1635 North Eighth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
