Before the war

He was born on 1 April 1834, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to William Edes and Caroline Childs. [sources: date: 14, 15; 4 (27 in 1861), 10 (36 in 1870), 11 (46 in 1880), 12 (66 in 1900), 16 (16 in 1850). place: 4, 10 (PA), 11, 12, 15, 16. parents: 15]

In 1850, he was living in Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents William and Caroline Edes, and with others (presumably siblings). He was a hostler, and had attended school within the year. [source: 16]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 4]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 30 August 1861 He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff. He served as a private in company C. [sources: 1, 4, 6 (31 Aug), 17]

He was sent to the Fairfax Seminary Hospital, in Alexandria, Virginia, on 17 June 1863, with sore feet. He had not returned by 8 September 1863, when Sinex asked for his return. On 6 October 1863, he returned from hospital. [sources: 2, 3]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 25 December 1863. [sources: 1, 6]

He was wounded on 14 May 1864. [sources: 1, 8]

His descriptive list was sent on 14 July 1864, but the descriptive list does not mention where it was sent. [source: 4]

He was absent, sick, at muster out. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 6 (discharged 6 July 1865), 17]

After the war

In 1867/68, he married Sarah [unknown family name]. In 1900, she had had four children, three of whom were alive; they may all be hers by a previous marriage. [source: 12]

In 1870, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah, and with three Fitzsimon's, who may be her children by a previous marriage. He was a house painter. [source: 10]

On 11 September 1876, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 7, 9]

In 1880, he was living at 704 Court Street, ward 8, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah, and with Joseph and Elizabeth (allegedly his children--but born to a father born in a different state than he was), with two Buckley's and with a boarder. He was a segar retailer. [sources: 11, 12]

In 1890, he was living in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [source: 6]

In 1900, he was living at 1248 Chestnut Street, ward 10, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah, and with four other step children or grandchildren. He was a day laborer. [source: 12]

On 13 February 1907, he died, in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died of valvular disease of the heart (duration 180 days). He was a painter, and was widowed. On 16 February 1907, he was buried in Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 9 (1908), 13, 14, 15]
