91st PA: William Emmet Egan

William Emmet Egan

Before the war

He was born in February 1847 (6; 3 (18 in 1862), 6 [53 in 1900], 7 [63 in 1910], 8 [76 in 1920]). He was born in New York, New York (3, 6, 7, 8).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 or 23 January 1862 (1, 3 [23 Jan], 5 [21 Jan]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Charles L Zinn (3). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 9, 10, 11).

He was discharged at camp near Falmouth, Virginia, on 18 January 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3, 5 [15 Jan]). He was a private, in company H (9, 10, 11).

After the war

In 1885/86, he married Annie R [unknown family name] (6, 7). In 1900, she had had 6 children, 6 of whom were then alive (6). In 1910, she had had 10 children, 8 of whom were then alive (7).

On 4 February 1891, he applied successfully from the District of Columbia for a pension (4, 5).

In 1900, he was living in Carroll Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Annie, and children David, Charles, Grace, Mary, Gretta, and Ralph (6). He was a farmer (6).

On 10 May 1907, he again applied for a pension (5).

In 1910, he was living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Annie, and children Gretta, Ralph, David, and Annie (7). He was living on his own income (7).

In 1920, he was living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Annie R, children Ralph, David, and Anna, and grandson Earnest Raymond (8). (Given his and his parents' birthplaces, Earnest was probably a grandchild of William's first marriage (8).) He was not working (8).

He died on 20 November 1920, at Perry County, Pennsylvania (5).

On 26 November 1920, his widow, Annie R Egan, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 5).
