91st PA: Philip C Elberti (or Alberti)

Philip C Elberti (or Alberti)

Before the war

He was born on 17 August 1841, in Middleton, [Dauphin County,] Pennsylvania. [source: date: 16; 5 (20 in 1861), 8 (38 in 1880), 11 (29 in 1870), 12 (9 in 1850), 17 (20 in 1862). place: 5, 8, 11, 20]

In 1850, he was living in South Middleton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with George and Mary Elberti (presumably his parents), and Ann and Hannah (presumably his sisters). He had attended school in the previous year. [source: 12]

In 1860, Philip C Elberti was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with George C Evans (a druggist). He was a druggist. [source: 5]

When he enlisted, he was a druggist. [source: 5]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. [source: 5]

When he enlisted in the regular army, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had blue eyes, brown hair, and a dark complexion. [source: 17]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff. He was a private, in company A. [sources: 1, 2, 5, 10, 19, 20, 21]

He was promoted from private, in company A, to hospital steward, by 30 November 1861. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 14]

Given his enlistment in the regular army, I assume that he was discharged on 25 May 1862 in order to enlist in the army. He was a hospital steward, in Field & Staff. [sources: 19, 20, 21]

On 26 May 1862, he enlisted as a hospital steward in the regular army. He enlisted for three years, at Washington, DC. He was an apothecary. [sources: 2, 4, 5, 6, 17, 18]

On 26 May 1865, he was discharged, because his term of service had expired. He was discharged as a hospital steward, at Washington, DC. [sources: 10, 17, 18]

After the war

In 1867/68, he married Mary F Stehman. She was born on 28 October 1846, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had seven children:
