When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 March 1865 He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Blair. He was a private in company H. [sources: 1, 3, 4 (Apr 1865), 11, 19, 20, 21]

After the war

He married Maria [Marie? Mary?] [unknown family name] in 1865/1866. She was born in 1837/38, in Pennsylvania. They had at least four children:

They moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa sometime between 1865/66 and 1867/68. [source: 8]

In 1870, he was living in Marion Township, Marshall County, Iowa, with his wife and their children Harvey and Mary. He was a farm laborer, and owned $725 in personal property. [source: 8]

He was a member of the Nebraska Grand Army of the Republic, post 310, in Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska. [source: 2]

On 6 April 1888, he applied successfully from Nebraska for a pension. [sources: 5, 11]

In 1890, he was living in Clinton, Sheridan County, Nebraska. [source: 3]

In 1893, he was living in Pine Ridge, Nebraska. [source: 7]

In 1900, he was living in White Clay Precinct, Sheridan County, Nebraska. He was a farmer. He was living with his wife, Maria [Marie?], and their daughter Sadie. Maria had had seven [?] children, two of whom were alive. [source: 6]

Aoubt 1904, he moved to National City, San Diego County, California. [source: 16]

On 25 March 1908, he again applied for a pension. [source: 11]

In 1910, his widow, Mary E Ellwanger, was living on Highland Avenue, in National City Township, San Diego County, California. She was a farmer, on her own farm. She was living with her daughter, Sadie Geery (a widow), and grandson Henry Geery. [source: 10]

In 1910, he was living with his son H S Ellwanger (and two grandchildren). He was a cook for a railroad camp. [source: 14]

On 11 May 1912, his wife, Mary E Ellwanger, died, at National City, California. She was buried in Greenwood Memorial Cemetery (presumably Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, San Diego County, California). She was survived by Mrs S Miller of National City, and Harry S Ellwanger of San Diego. She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery. [sources: 16, 18]

In 1920, he was living on a farm, on Woolman Avenue, San Diego Township, San Diego County, California. He was a gardener, in his own garden. His children, Sadie Miller and Henry S Ellwanger seem to have been living at 2092 7th Avenue, National City, San Diego County, California. [sources: 13, 15]

In 1930, he was living on 7th Avenue, National City, San Diego County, California. He was living with his daughter, Sadie Miller. He was widowed, and was not working. [source: 12]

He died on 19 April 1931, at National City, San Diego County, California. Funeral services were held at Bonham Brothers' Mortuary, under the auspices of the Heintzelman Post Number 33, Grand Army of the Republic. He was a member of a GAR post in Rushville, Nebraska. He was survived by two children, Mrs Sadie Miller, and Harry S Ellwanger (both living in National City). He was buried in the Greenwood Memorial Cemetery (presumably Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, San Diego County, California). [sources: 11, 16, 17]

ELLWANGER SERVICES WILL BE HELD TODAY

Funeral services for Henry Ellwanger will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bonham Brothers' chapel under auspices of Heintzelman post No. 33, G.A.R.

Mr. Ellwanger came to National City 27 years ago from Hipass, Calif., where he was engaged in ranching. Surviving are two children, Mrs. Sadie Miller and Harry S. Ellwanger, both of National City. Mr. Ellwanger was a member of the G.A.R. He served with the 91st Pennsylvania, company H, first division, third brigade of fifth corps.

Burial will be beside his wife, who died in 1912, in the family plot at Greenwood Memorial cemetery.

ELLWANGER--At National City, Cal., May 11, 1912, Mary E. Ellwanger, wife of Henry Ellwanger of San Diego and mother of Mrs. S. Miller of National City and Harry S. Ellwanger of San Diego; a native of Pennsylvania, aged 72 years and 24 days.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral services at Johnson, Connell & Saum's chapel, D and Seventh streets, at 10 o'clock a.m. today, Rev. Louis G. Spring officiating. Interment at Greenwood cemetery.
