In 1850, he was living in the 2nd ward of Spring Garden, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents and siblings. [source: 7]
In 1860, he was living in the 13th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his parents. He had attended school within the year. [source: 31]
He was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted. [source: 20]
He enlisted, was appointed, and was mustered into service on 7 October 1861. He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was mustered into service as second lieutenant, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Captain Dye. He was second lieutenant of company D. On 29 June 1862, he, along with the other commissioned officers in the regiment (except Colonel Gregory), signed a statement denying accusations that they were on the verge of open mutiny, that the regiment had been reduced to 400 men, and that Colonel Gregory was too lenient to Confederates and too harsh to men in the regiment. On 10 December 1862, he went to Washington DC because he was sick. He was still there on 7 February 1863. He returned for duty on 7 March 1863. [sources: 11, 12]
He was commissioned, but not mustered in as, captain on 11 January 1863, when Joseph Sinex was promoted. According to the company D list of commissioned officers, however, he was mustered into service as Captain by Lieutenant Stewart on 11 January 1863. Probably on 13 May 1863, he provided information about the death of David Irvine (D). [source: 35]
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 22]
He accompanied a detail assigned to provost duty on 12 August 1863. [source: 6]

He was appointed to a Board of Survey on 3 October 1863, which inventoried and reported the condition of public property transferred from Captain Bowman to Morris Kayser. [source: 8]
On 16 December 1863, private Bender, of company G (either Jacob Bender or John Bender) was detailed to nurse him. [source: 9]
On 16 December 1863, he was discharged on surgeon's certificate. However, he died of typhoid pneumonia on 18 December 1863 at Bealton, Virginia. (William Keir signed the death certificate) On 24 December 1863, the Fifth Army Corps issued special order 276 revoking paragraph 2 of special order 267, which had dismissed Faust (14, 17). The funeral was held on 22 December, from 502 North Seventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (his father's residence). He was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 27, 33, 34]
His parents' cemetery plot in Philadelphia has a marker for him, but the plot record lists only his parents and small children. (The marker is a few yards away from George Murphy's, and Denny Carroll found it by chance while looking at Murphy's new marker.) [source: 26]

FAUST.--On the 16th instant, in camp near Bealton Station, Va., of typhoid pneumonia, Captain HORACE B. FAUST, Company D, Ninety-first Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, son of David and Jane Faust, in the 21st year of his age.
The male friends of the family, also the officers and men of the Ninety-first Regiment and other officers and men of the Army of the Potomac now in the city, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, without further notice, from the residence of his father, No. 502 N. Seventh street, on Tuesday afternoon, the 22d instant, at 1 o'clock. To proceed to Laurel Hill.
