Before the war

In 1865/1866, he married Catharine A [unknown family name] (6). In 1900, she had had ten children, seven of whom were alive (6). In 1910, six were still alive (7).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 3, 4). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (3). His enlistment was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (3). He was a private in company A (1, 11).

He was discharged on 29 April 1865 by special order 194, War Department, Adjutant Generals' Office (1, 2, 3, 4 [14 May], 10). He was a private, in company A (11).

After the war

In 1869, he testified supporting Maria Shriner's pension application (12).

In 1870, he was living in Mt Pleasant Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a carpenter, and owned $100 in personal property (9). He was living with his wife Kate (and another family with a different surname) (9).

In 1890, he was living in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office Emmitsburg) (4).

In 1900, he was living on Frederick Street, in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland (6). He was a night watchman (6). He was living with his wife Catharine and children Herbert and Bertha (6).

In 1910, he was living on Frederick Street, in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland (7). He was a night watchman at St Joseph's (7). He was living with his wife Catharine and daughter Bertha (7).

In 1920, he was living in Emmitsburg, Frederick County, Maryland (8). He had no occupation (8). He was widowed, and was living with his daughter Bertha and granddaughter Mary (8).

On 26 October 1923, he applied unsuccessfully from Maryland for a pension (2, 6).
