John Finn

Before the war

He was born in February 1834 (5, 12 [1825], 15 [1825], 16 [1825]); 2 (30 in 1865), 5 [66 in 1900], 8 [22 in 1860], 9 [28 in 1870], 10 [43 [??] in 1880]). He was born in Rockhill, County Limerick, Ireland (2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 14).

He immigrated to the United States in 1856 (5). By 1900, he was a naturalized citizen (5).

In 1860, he was living in Hollidaysburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his mother Mary Finn, and with Daniel and Mary Finn (presumably his siblings) (8).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 March 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd (2). He was a private in company C (1, 16, 17).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3). He was a private, in company C (17).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Hollidaysburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his mother Mary (9). He was an ore miner (9).

In 1870/1871, he married Margaret Naughton (5, 13, 14). She was born in 1845 (13) or February 1840 (5, 14), in Six Mile Bridge, County Clair, Ireland (14). In 1900 and 1910, she had had seven children, six of whom were alive (5, 6). They had five children (15):

In 1880, he was living in Blair, Blair County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his mother Mary, his wife Margaret, and his children William, Mary, Daniel [?], and John (10). He was a miner, and had been out of work for two months in the previous year (10).

In 1890, he was living in Blair Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (post office Hollidaysburg) (3).

On 20 May 1891, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 11).

In 1900, he was living in Blair Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (5). He was apparently not working (5). He was living with his wife Margaret, and children Mary, John, Margaret, and Eliza (5).

He died on 23 July 1900 (11 [1901], 12 [1900], 14 [1910], 15 [1900], 16 [1900]). He was buried in Old Saint Mary's Cemetery, Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (12, 15, 16).

On 3 August 1901, his widow, Margaret Finn, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 11).

In 1910, his widow, Margaret Finn, was living at 301 Garber Street, Hollidaysburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania (6). She was living with her daughters Bessie Finn and Mary Creamer and a granddaughter (6).

In 1920, his widow, Margaret Finn, was living at 301 Garber Street, Hollidaysburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with her daughters Mary Creamer and Bess McGraw and three grandchildren (7).

His widow, Margaret Naughton Finn, died in 1922 and was buried in the Old Saint Mary's Cemetery, Hollidaysburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania (13).
