He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 January 1862 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Black (3). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 9, 10, 11 (K)).
He died on 10 August 1862 in Alexandria, Virginia (1, 2, 3). Poisoned whiskey was suspected as the cause of death (7). He was a private, in company H (9, 10, 11 (K)).
On 27 August 1862, his widow, Mary Finnegan, applied successfully for a pension under the act of 14 July 1862 (4, 6, 8). Her application was accepted, and a certificate for $8 per month, retroactive to 10 August 1862 was issued on 18 July 1866.
Mary Finnegan applied for an increase in her pension under the act of 25 July 1866 (8). Her application was granted, and a certificate issued on 20 August 1867, for an additional $2 per month for each child less than sixteen years old (8).
On 5 [?] July 1871, Mary Griffith (probably his widow, remarried) applied successfully for a pension on behalf of his minor children x(4, 6, 8).
