Before the war

He was born in 1816/17 (6 (44 in 1861), 7 (44 in 1861), 10 [52 in 1870], 12 [44 in 1860], 13 [65 in 1880], 14 [67 at death in 1883]). He was born in Little Washington, Lancaster, Pennsylvania (6, 10, 12, 13, 14). He was born to John and Susan Fletcher (14).

In 1860, he was living in the 15th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Sarah, and children John, Mary, Lizzie, Howard, and Anna, along with Robert H Lout (head of household) and Newton Lout (12). He was a carpenter (12).

When he enlisted, he was a carpenter, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (6, 7).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 October 1861 (1, 7). He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was mustered into service at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a private in company I (1, 7, 15).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (8).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer at 25 December 1863 (1, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (6, 7).

He was promoted to corporal on 7 March 1864 (1, 5) or 7 April 1864 (2).

On 15 April 1864, he was one of seven men in the regimental pioneer corps (3).

On 17 November 1864, Sellers included him in a report "[i]n compliance with S.O. 59 dated Hd Qrs 5 Army Corps November 15" 1864" (4).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5, 6, 7). He was a corporal, in company I (15 (cpl)).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a carpenter, and owned $1,800 in real estate, and $600 in personal property (10). He was living with his wife Sarah, and with Jacob, Mary, Elizabeth, Howard, Emma, and Susan (presumably their children (10).

In 1880, he was living at 1207 Heath [?] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Sarah A, children Mary, Elizabeth, Howard, Emma, and Susie, and a grandson, Charles Druckenmiller (13). He was a carpenter (13).

He died on 18 December 1883, of injuries received by a fall down stairs (11, 14). He died at (or was buried from) 124 South Eleventh Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was married (14). He was a carpenter (14). On 21 December 1883, he was buried at Fernwood Cemetery (14).

On 28 July 1890, his widow, Sarah A Fletcher, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (9, 11).
