Before the war

In 1860, he may be the Edward Gardner living in North East Ward, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with William (67), Robert (21), Ann (60), and Emma (12) Gardner. He had attended school within the year. [source: 20]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and auburn hair. [sources: 4, 5, 6]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 1 January 1864 in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was enrolled for three years, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bolenies [?] or Beleucius [?]. He served in company M. He was mustered in as a private, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 (musician)]

He was promoted to musician. [source: 5]

He was transferred from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st on 20 July 1864. On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M of the 62nd Pennsylvania, were assigned to company G. On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company. He was then present, as a musician. He was a musician in company K. After the war

In 1869/70, he married Mary A [unknown family name]. She was born on 25 September 1850, in Pennsylvania. She apparently had ten children, four alive in 1900, including these:

In 1870, he was living in ward 6, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Mary (presumably his wife), and Ann (perhaps his mother) Garden, and with Margaret and William Hiler. He was a slater, and owned $200 in personal property. [source: 18]

In 1880, he was living at 446 West Lemon Street, ward 9, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary and children Annie Elizabeth and Edward Warner. He was a slater. [source: 17]

On 3 December 1889, his daughter Anna Elizabeth Garden married Edwin Jacob Kepner, at the Grace Lutheran parsonage (presumably in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania). He was born in 1868/69, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to George A Kepner and [unknown], and was a mechanic. [source: 21]

In 1890, he was living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [source: 7]

On 19 June 1891, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 8, 10]

In 1900, he was living at 864 North Prince, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary, his daughter Minnie, and his son William. He was a slater, and had been out of work for six months in the previous year. [source: 9]

On 22 February 1909, Mary A Garden, his wife, died. She was buried in Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [source: 15]

On 22 [?] June 1909, he again applied for a pension. [source: 10]

In 1910. he was living at 524 Mary Street, ward 9, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his children Minnie and William. He was a jail guard. [source: 19]

On 2 September 1911, he died, at Philadephia Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer. He died of chronic interstitial nephritis, with uremia contributing.
