Before the war

He was born in 1835/36 (6 (26 in 1861), 7 (25 in 1861), 10 [25 in 1860], 12 [33 in 1870], 13 [35 at death in 1873] ). He was born in Carlisle, England (6, 7, 10, 12, 13).

In 1860, he was living in ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Isabella and Thomas (presumably their son) (10). He was a carpenter (10).

When he enlisted, he was a carpen[ter] (6, 7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (6, 7).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 September 1861 (1, 3, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (6). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Captain Dye (6, 16, 17).

He was appointed corporal on 8 October 1861 (5).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Carpenter (7). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Swan (7).

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia (1).

On 17 February 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, effective 1 January 1865 (2).

He was discharged on 16 March 1865 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3, 9). He was a sergeant in company K (1, 16, 17).

After the war

On 30 March 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (8, 14).

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Isabella and children Thomas, George, and Sarah (12). He was a carpenter, and owned $600 in real estate, and $250 in personal property (12). He was a citizen (12).

He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 15 May 1873, of consumption (13). He was then a carpenter (13). He was married (13). He died at, or was buried from, Indiana above D street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was buried on 18 May 1873, at Greenwood Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Philadelphia (13).

On 28 May 1873, his widow, Isabel L Gash, applied successfully for a pension (8, 14).

In 1880, his widow, Isabel Gash, was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). She was living with her mother, Hanna Hustter, and with three children: George, Sarah, and Mary (11).

In 1890, his widow, Isabel Gash, was living at 439 or 449 East Indiana, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 4). George H Gash, a brickmaker, was also living there (4).

On 14 September 1895, his widow, Isabel L Gash, died (15). She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, on Tuesday, from her late residence 449 East Indiana Avenue (15).
