Before the war

He was born in March 1846 (4, 9 [1844]; 2 (18 in 1863), 3 [20], 4 [54 in 1900]). He was born in New York (2, 3 [20], 4).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-3/4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private for three years in the 118th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 23 November 1863, at Easton Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3, 4).

He transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania the 91st Pennsylvania on 2 June 1865, by special order 138 headquarters Army of the Potomac, dated 1 June 1865 (1, 2, 3). He had received an advance bounty of $25, and was due $75 (2). He had drawn $58.74 in clothing since his enlistment (2). He had last been paid, by Major Holman, on 31 December 1864 (2). He was a private, in company E (2, 11).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 3). He was a private, in company E (11).

After the war

In 1889/90, he married Jennie [unknown family name] (4). In 1900, she had had one child, who was not alive (4).

In 1900, he was living in Berkshire, Tioga County, New York (4). He was a laborer at a tannery (4). He was living with his wife Jennie (4).

On 13 June 1902, he successfully applied from New York for a pension (4, 8).

He again applied for a pension on 14 March 1907 (8).

He died in 1907 (8, 9). He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire, Tioga County, New York (9).

On 9 November 1907, his widow, Virginia Gay, successfully applied from New York for a pension (4, 8).

In 1910, his widow, Jennie Gay, was living in Berkshire, Tioga County, New York (5).

In 1920, his widow, Jennie Gay, was living on State Road, in Berkshire Township, Tioga County, New York (6).

Vergina B Gay was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Berkshire, Tioga County, New York (10). Perhaps she is his wife (10).
