He was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, in 1840/1842, to Milligan Gebler and Mary A Grace [sources: place: 5, 13. date: 5 (20 in 1861), 8 (21 at death in 1863), 13 (17 in 1860). parents: 13]

In 1857, his father, Milligan Gebler, was a blacksmith, at 16th above Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

He supported his mother starting about 1857, giving her on average about 2-1/2 dollars per week. His father suffered from loss of sight in his left eye, an affection of his spine, an affection of his kidneys, and old age. [source: 12]

In 1858-1861, his father, Milligan Gebler, was a blacksmith, at 1321 Brown Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

In 1860, he was living in ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents, Milligan and Mary Gebler, and with various other Gebler's (siblings, and perhaps cousins?). [source: 13]

When he enlisted, he was a salesman. [source: 5]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. [source: 5]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 October 1861. He was enlisted by Lieutenant Murphy, for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 5, 12 (enlisted September, mustered in 24 Oct), 18, 19]

He was promoted on 22 May 1862 to corporal. [sources: 1, 4, 5]

He was promoted to sergeant on 1 January 1863. [sources: 1, 4, 5]

He was killed in action on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia. He was a sergeant, in company F. He had last been paid through 28 February 1863, by Major Sheridan. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 18, 19]

Since a death certificate was filed in Philadelphia, his body was probably sent to Philadelphia. [source: 8]

After the war

On 21 October 1864, his mother, Mary A Gebler, successfully applied for a pension, under the act of 14 July 1862. She was living at 844 North 12th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted on 2 March 1865, retroactive to 3 May 1863. She initially received $8 per month. [sources: 6, 7, 12]

In 1870, Milligan and Mary Gebler were living in ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 16]

Milligan Gebler died on 20 January 1874, of hemiplegia. He had an iron business. He died at 1312 Master, ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried at Odd Fellows' Cemetery. [source: 14]

Mary Gebler died on 31 March 1887, of senile gangrene. She died at 1312 Master Street, ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried at Odd Fellows' Cemetery. [sources: 12, 15]
