91st PA: Henry L Gentle

Henry Gentle

Before the war

He was born in 1837/38 (2 (24 in 1862), 3 (22 in 1860), 7 (12 in 1850)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 7).

In 1850, he was living in Bristol Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with Samuel and Harriet Gentle (presumably his parents), and with Maria, Hezekiah, Eliza, and Mary Gentle (presumably his siblings) (7). He had attended school within the year (7).

He married Sarah I [unknown family name] (5). They had at least two children (5):

In 1860, he was living in the 23rd ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He was living with Sarah (presumably his wife) and Samuel (presumably their child) (3). He was a carpenter, and owned $150 in personal property (3).

When he enlisted, he was a carp[enter] (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 17 January 1862 (1, 2). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (2). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant William R Milligan (1, 2, 9, 10).

He was missing in action on 13 December 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia (1). He was a private, in company K (9, 10).

After the war

On 17 October 1863, his widow Sarah I Gentel applied successfully for a pension (4, 5, 8). She initially received $8 per month, beginning 13 December 1862 (5). Her pension was increased by $2 per month for each of their two children until they reached 16 years old, beginning 25 July 1866 (5).

In 1870, his widow, Sarah Gentell, was living in the 25th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). She was living with her children Samuel and Eliza, along with others (including a 5-year-old Ella Gentell) (6).

Sarah J Jones, guardian of his minor dependents, applied successfully for a pension on 22 January 1875 (4, 5, 8). (She is presumably his remarried widow.)
