In 1850, he was living in ward 5, Southwark, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his presumed parents James and Elizabeth Gibson, with various others (presumably siblings), and with Priscilla Manyen [?]. [source: 19]

He probably married Adaline [unknown family name]. She was born about 1840/41, in Pennsylvania. They probably had these children: [sources: 10, 11]

In 1860, he was living in the 20th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a painter. He was living with his wife Adeline, his son Harry, and his mother Elizabeth. [source: 10]

When he enlisted, he was a painter. [source: 5]

Description

In 1861, when he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 5]

In 1906, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and gray hair. [source: 17]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr. He was a corporal, in company A. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 15, 16, 17, 20]

He was promoted to sergeant on 20 August 1861. [source: 5]

On 2 September 1862, he witnessed the enlistments of Joseph Mantz (A) and Patrick Halligan (B), at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 5 September 1862, he witnessed the enlistment of Charles Hart (A), at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 21, 22, 23]

He was promoted to commissary sergeant. [source: 4]

He also served in company G of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He enlisted on 19 January 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a house painter, and owned $200 in personal property. He was living with his wife Adeline, his children Harry and Lizzie, and another person. [source: 11]

On 2 January 1873, he applied successfully for a pension. He applied again on 25 February 1907. [sources: 6, 9]

In about 1880, he married Nellie [unknown family name]. She was born about 1844/45, in New York. This was his second marriage, and her first. They apparently had no children. [sources: 12, 13, 14, 18]

In 1880, he was living at 1534 Hutchison Street, ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a house painter. He was living with his wife Nellie and his mother Elizabeth. [source: 12]

In 1890, he was living at 1547 or 1549 Amboy, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a painter. [source: 7 (1547), 8 (1549)]

In 1900, he was living at 1240 Fitzgerald Street, ward 39, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Nellie. He was a house painter. [source: 18]

On 23 June 1906, he was admitted to the Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He had a hernia. He was a protestant. He was a painter. His wife, Nellie Gibson, lived at 806 North 10th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 15, 16, 17]

In 1906, he was present at the Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was receiving a pension of $12 per month. [source: 15]
