He was born in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, to Richard Gorby and Margaret Carter (4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18).
On 26 December 1854, he married Abby Ann O'Harra (9). They had six children (9):
When he enlisted, he was a mason (5).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4, 5).
He also served in company A of the 37th Pennsylvania (Militia) Infantry (6, 7, 15). He was enrolled on 27 June 1863 (6).
He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 91st Pennsylvania on 23 February 1864 (1, 4, 5, 6, 15). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Hildeburn (4, 5). He was mustered in as a private in company K (1, 18, 19, 20).
On 30 April 1865, he was detailed as part of the division provost guard (16).
On 7 July 1864, he was (probably) sick in his quarters (8).
On 28 September 1864, he was detailed by General Griffin for duty in the provost guard at division headquarters (2, 3).
In June 1865, he was detailed in the provost guard at Division Headquarters (17).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6, 15). He had served for seventeen months (14, 18). He was a private, in company K (19, 20).
In 1870, he was living in South Chester Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Abby, children James, May, and Maggie, and in-laws James and Catharine O'Harra (10). He was a stone mason, and owned $200 in personal property (10).
In 1880, he was living in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Abbeyann, daughter Maggie, and in-laws James and Catharine O'Hara (11). He was a stone mason (11).
On 28 December 1888, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 15).
In 1890, he was living in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (6).
On 27 June 1898, he was admitted to the National Soldiers' Home (14, 18). He was present in the Southern Branch in 1898 (14). He was admitted from Virginia (14). He had a hernia (14). He was receiving a pension of $6 per month (14).
In 1900, he was living at 707 Crosby Street, Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his son James and James's family (12). He was widowed, and reported no occupation (12).
On 5 March 1907, he again applied for a pension (15).
In 1910, he was living at 927 Upland Street, Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his son James and James's family (13). He reported no occupation (13).
On 21 June 1912, he was discharged from the Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (18). He was then receiving a pension of $20 per month (18).
He died on 5 February 1918, at Chester, [Delaware County,] Pennsylvania (15).
