Jeremiah Grazier

Jeremiah Grazier

Alias

He is borne on the 91st's records under the alias 'Jeremiah Grazier', but on all other records as 'Israel Grazier'.

Before the war

He was born on 22 March 1834, in Pennsylvania, to Peter Grazier and Catherine Beck. [sources: date: 23, 24; 2 (29 in 1863), 11 (71 yrs 11 mos 26 dys at death), 16 (27 in 1863), 19 (15 in 1850), 20 (26 in 1860), 21 (35 in 1870), 22 (45 in 1880). place: 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24. parents: 11, 19, 20, 24]

In 1850, he was living in Warriorsmark Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Peter and Catherine Grazier, and with Gideon, Lydia, Abednego, and Jane (presumably siblings). [source: 19]

In 1860, he was living in Warriorsmark Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Peter and Catharine Grazier, and with Henry (presumably a sibling). [source: 20]

In 1862, he married Caroline [unknown family name]. She was born on 9 April 1842. They had seven known children:

When he enlisted, he was a farmer. [source: 16]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had hazel eyes, brown hair, and a dark complexion. [source: 16]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted on 12 August 1863, at Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. He was mustered into service in the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry on 27 August 1863, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He served in company B. [sources: 1, 6, 7 (12 Jul), 9 (9 Aug), 14 (9 Aug), 16)]

On the muster rolls from September/October 1863 through 30 June 1864, he was reported present. [source: 16]

On the muster rolls from July/August 1864 through 31 October 1864, he was reported absent in dismounted camp. [source: 16]

He was assigned to the 91st as a deserter from the draft. However, this apparently actually referred to a different person. He claimed that 'he was sent from dismounted Camp into the Valley at the time of Early's Raid and finding himself near home left and was arrested on the Route as a deserter and sent to Carlisle Barracks'. (Early's raid started occurred from June through August 1864; see for example the discussion in Wikipedia in 'Valley campaigns of 1864' (accessed 28 May 2014).) [source: 15]

He was transferred on 6 November 1864 to the 117th Pennsylvania Infantry (which is the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry). When he was transferred, he was a private, in company I. [sources: 1, 2 (13th PA Cav), 3, 5, 6]

On the muster rolls from November/December 1864 through 30 April 1865, he was reported present. [source: 16]

He mustered out with his company of the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry, on 14 July 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina. [sources: 7, 9, 14, 16]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Logan Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Caroline, and their children Marion, Jesse, Nettie, and Annie. He was a farmer, and owned $2,000 in real estate, and $500 in personal property. [source: 21]

On 26 August 1875, his wife, Caroline, died. She was buried in the Asbury United Methodist Cemetery, Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 18]

He married Martha [unknown family name]. She was born on 2 January 1842. [sources: 11, 17]

On 24 January 1880, he successfully applied for a pension (8, 9).

In 1880, he was living in Logan Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Martha, and children Marion, Jesse, Nettie, Annie, Charley, Harry, and John. [source: 22]

In 1890, he was living in Logan Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. His right arm had been broken. [source: 14]

On 22 July 1890, his wife Martha died. She was buried in the Asbury United Methodist Cemetery, Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 17]

On 24 July 1890, he applied for a pension under the Act of 27 June 1890, because he was 'partially unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of a borken right wrist, and chronic diarrhoea'. [source: 16]

On 3 February 1893, he applied for an increase of pension He was receiving $6 per month. He believed he deserved an higher rate because of his disability, in particular heart disease (incurred at Altoona Pennsylvania about 1878) and an injury to his right wrist, which he received while in service, but which the Medical Board of Altoona disallowed because he hadn't proved he received it while in the service. [source: 16]

A few days before Christmas 1897, he slipped and fell walking home fromt he Glover Farm, with George Taneyhill [?], and broke his left wrist. [source: 16]

In 1899, he reported that he was widowed, and had had seven children. [source: 16]

In 1900, he was living in Logan Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his daughter Anna, Anna's family, his daughter Nettie, and a boarder. [source: 23]

He was last paid his pension through 4 January 1906. He was received $12 per month. [source: 16]

On 19 March 1906, he died, at 914 22nd Avenue, ward 11, Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He died of acute Bright's disease (duration 16 days). He was a farmer. On 21 March 1906, he was buried in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery, Altoona, Blair County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 9, 11 (19 Mar), 16 (18 Mar), 24 (19 Mar)]

Note on identification

According to regimental records, Jeremiah Grazier was transferred to company B of the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (see source 3, and also sources 1 and 2). According to the index to compiled service records, he served in the 13th PA Cavalry under the name 'Israel Grazier' (see sources 5 and 6).

The other records I have don't mention his service in the 91st (see especially the pension records, source 16). And a Jeremiah Grazier did live in WarriorsMark, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (see for examples sources 4, 10, and 13). But the evidence is clear enough, especially if Seller's letter of 18 October 1864 (source 15) is about him, that I've simply reported Israel Grazier as having served in the 91st.

DECLARATION FOR INCREASE OF PENSION.
(Old and New Disabilities.)

State of Pennsylvania, County of Blair, ss:

ON THIS 3d day of Feby, A.D. one thousand, eight hundred and ninety-three, personally appeared before me, a Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid, Israel Grazier, aged 58 years, a resident of Altoona, County of Blair, State of Penna., who, being duly sworn according to law, declares he is a pensioner of the United States, enrolled at the Pittsburgh Pa. That he believes himself to be entitled to an increase of pension on the ground that the rate allowed him is too low and not commensurate with the extent of his present disability.

He further declares that he is disabled in the following manner, to wit: by an injury to his right wrist, incurred in the Military Service of the United States while a private in Co B--13th Regt Pa Vol Cavly.

Application is also hereby made for increase of pension on account of a new disability, to wit: at Heart disease incurred at Altoona Pa. on or about the year 1878.

This disability from the injury to wrist was claimed for in his original declaration under act of June 27 1890. and also under old law - but was disallowed under the New Act by the Medical Board of Altoona--And by the Pension Office under the old law for the reason that its incureness [?] in service was not established. he now claims pension on account of it as a new disability under Act June 27th 1890.
