Before the war

He was born in 1833/34 (4 (27 in 1861), 8 (49 at death in 1883)). He was born in Belfast, Ireland (4, 8).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 August 1861 (1, 4, 5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (4, 5 [Lt Col]). He was a private in company C (1, 10).

He was discharged on 15 February 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Washington DC (1 [10 March], 2, 3, 5 [10 March], 6 [21 Feb]). He was a private, in company C (10).

He also served in company B of the 196th Pennsylvania Infantry (6, 7, 9). He was enlisted on 19 July 1864, and mustered out on 17 November 1864 (6).

After the war

On 13 January [?] 1880, he unsuccessfully applied for a pension (7, 9).

He died on 20 March 1883 (7, 8). He worked in a book store (8). He was living at, or died at, 1718 Lombard Street (8). He was buried at Odd Fellows' Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8).

On 28 April 1883, his widow, Mary J Greer, applied successfully for a pension (7, 9).

In 1890, his widow, Jane May, was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, probably at 1611 Bainbridge Street (6).
