[source: New Orleans Tribune 24 December 1865, page 1, column 5]

The Houston Telegraph of the 1st instant reports the arrest, by General Gregory, of Mr. Elmore, late a Colonel in the Confederate States Army, on the charge of using dogs to catch a negro, and falsely imprisoning him. A writ of habeas corpus was served on Gen. Gregory, who respected it, but asked an extension until January 15 to answer it, so that he might receive instructions from Washington in regard to the matter. Colonel Elmore was released upon giving heavy bail.
